Lincoln is a land of Cathedrals and history. It has the most cathedrals and churches per square mile of any town in England and is home to William the Conqueror's castle: Lincoln Castle, where the Magna Carta is housed. There are incredible examples of architecture from every time period - Saxon, Norman, Gothic, Medieval to Georgian, Victorian Gothic and Modern. Some of the earliest settlements of Lincoln were built in the first centuary BC. Lincoln is also home to the oldest lead-covered spire and the tallest parish church spire.
The city of Lincoln has put together what are called 'Short Break' packages which are a very cost effective way to see many of the sites. Each "Short Break Package" is a bundle which includes accomodation and passes to the area sites. They also contain literature specific to each break to help you decide what you want to do. There are short break packages for everything from hikinig to a day of pampering to a day of golf to a tour of the restaurants of the area.
Without question, you'll want to take the "Short Break: Churches of Linconshire." It's only £51.30 per person for a 2 night stay, and will give you access to some of Lincoln's more famous attractions including Lincoln Cathedral and Lincoln Castle.
Lincoln Cathedral, built by William the Conqueror in 1072, and once the world's tallest structure at 525 feet, is an impressive structure and is visible from 25 miles away. It is considered one of the finest medieval buildings in Europe, and features a Romanesque Frieze on its west font dating from 1072. The structure itself, has been built and rebuilt through the ages due to fires and earthquakes, and most of the structure is from the 13 centuary. It was recently featured in "The DaVinci Code" Movie when Westminster Abbey refused to allow filming there.
Lincoln Castle, also known as William the Conqueror's Castle, was built due to its strategic significance to the area. Lincoln, in William the Conqueror's time, was at the heart of the crossroads to many commercial trading routes, and a castle here would help guard these routes. It remains one of the most impressive Norman castles in the United Kingdom. For some picturesque views of the Cathedral, the City of Lincoln and the surrounding countryside, you can walk the 12th centuary walls around the castle. Also on display at the castle is a surviving original of the Magna Carta, one of the first written law documents in the western world.
