Chester is an ancient city, settled by Romans, invaded by Vikings, and evolving into a Norman stronghold and then a Medieval Port. It is one of the best kept walled cities in England, and it features many historic sites to visit. You can walk on top of the Roman walls which have remained largely as they were in Roman times and see excellent views of Chester and surrounds. Scientists are just now uncovering artifacts from the largest stone Roman Amphitheatre in Britain, and finds are on display at the nearby Chester Visitor Centre. You can also see re-enactments of Roman soldiers and gladiators as well. Next to the Newgate, you can see a display of Roman baths and masonry which includes a reassembled under-floor heating system and various columns.
The Rows are a unique system of covered walkways with shops on two levels and are home to the best shopping in the city. It is believed that these unique buildings are of Scandinavian influence, as there was a known Scandinavian presence in the city in the 9th and 11th centuries. They are open to the street on one side and the levels can be reached from stairs at ground level. The Rows are perhaps the most photographed feature in Chester, and are very much worth a visit while you are in Chester.
The award winning Chester Zoo specializes in conservation of endangered species. It's goal is to give the animals the most natural environment possible and it uses plants native to their environement. It is a fun way to spend an afternoon and has exhibits for singles and families. Many of the exhibits are hands-on and there is a special Fun Ark play area to let children play safely. Children can also get their face painted at the Fountain Shop.
